CORNELIA – Fire destroyed a single-wide modular home outside Cornelia Saturday.
Habersham County E-9-1-1 received a call at 11:24 a.m. Saturday reporting the fire at a home located at 1723 Garrison Road.
Fire was showing from the back left of the structure when firefighters arrived.
Habersham County Emergency Services Capt. Michael Alexander provided more details from the scene.
“We responded to a fire at this location,” Alexander said. “When we got here, there were heavy flames and smoke showing. Not very long after that, we had flames out of both ends of the house,” Alexander said. “Firefighters made entry initially and started knocking the flames down. They eventually backed out and we performed an exterior attack.”
Med 12, Med 21, Engine 12, Engine 13 and Pumper 12 responded, along with Lee Arrendale State Prison Fire Department and Habersham County Sheriff’s Office.
Habersham Electric Membership Corp. crews went to the scene to disconnect power. The top of a power pole in the yard caught fire and burned.
“It took us 30, maybe 40, minutes to get the fire under control,” Alexander said. “All the occupants were out of the house. I think there were two pets that didn’t survive.”
The American Red Cross Disaster Action Team responded to assist the family of four (two adults and two youth) with immediate needs.
Firefighters remained on scene until just after 1:30 p.m.
Garrison Road was closed in the area of the fire, between Garner Road and Pea Ridge Road, for about two hours due to fire apparatus and other emergency vehicles.
The cause and origin of the fire are under investigation.
