The Hall County Commission unanimously agreed Thursday to give control of the Lake Lanier Olympic Park on Clarks Bridge Road to the city of Gainesville.
Hall County Assistant Administrator Marty Nix said Thursday that the county and city have been jointly operating the venue.
"Gainesville wanted to take on more presence in that venue," Nix said. "We felt that it would be better if there was just one entity, one government managing the park instead of two. It would be less complicated."
Nix said the county and city have been looking to hand the park's operations to the city for several years. In March, Gainesville Mayor Danny Dunagan announced plans to pursue legislation that would begin the transition.
The agreement approved by Hall County commissioners Thursday will become effective in September. It will make Gainesville the sole holder of an ongoing lease for the park with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers by removing the county from the lease.
Gainesville is planning to pay for the additional financial responsibility with an increased hotel/motel tax.
