STATE GOLF: Gainesville girls in sixth place after Day 1

ACWORTH — Morgan Nichol fired an 81 to lead the Gainesville girls golf team on Day 1 of the Class 6A golf tournament Monday at Cobblestone Golf Course. 

Nichol currently is 17th overall on the leaderboard. As a team, the Lady Red Elephants are sitting in sixth place after shooting a collective 258 in the first round.

Karina Collins turned in an 87 while Catherine Cook shot a 90 and Vivian Robinson rolled in with a 94.

Johns Creek has a comfortable 23-stroke lead over defending state champion Northview and the rest of the field. Gen Wu is on her way to the individual state title with a four-under 68. She's three strokes ahead of her teammate Kate Song and Chattahoochee's Kimberly Shen. 

The final round is slated for Tuesday at Cobblestone. Tee time is 8:30 a.m.
