Commissioners in Forsyth County plan to construct a barrier to try to prevent access to the 100-year old Settles Bridge over the Chattahoochee River.
The bridge, that connects Forsyth and Gwinnett counties, closed decades ago and the AJC reports it remains in the Chattahoochee River National Recreation area as a cultural resource.
Even though it's illegal to cross the steel beam bridge, people jump from it's base height of 25 feet above the river to swim, resulting in two accidental drownings in 2017.
Gwinnett county leaders removed a few beams and increased patrols on their side to increase safety and deter adventure-seekers.
Construction on the Forsyth County barrier should begin any day according to Commissioner Laura Semanson.
