A severe thunderstorm roared across White County Saturday morning, leaving in its path downed trees and power lines and structural damage in the Leaf community.

Chattahoochee Baptist Church sustained minor structural damage and the church van had a window blown out during the storm. Additionally, damage was reported at Ramey Motors, Leaf Grocery, a metal building beside Leaf Grocery, a home on Duncan Bridge Road and chicken houses located off Ga. 115 East.

Lt. Seth Weaver, deputy director of White County Emergency Management Agency, said the storm hit around 7:30 a.m. while most people were still at home.

"No report of any injuries, and we're thankful for that," Weaver said.

Duncan Bridge Road was shut down between Ga. 115 and Ga. 254 due to downed trees, power lines and power poles.

At the height of the storm some 3,500 customers lost power.

Weaver said cleanup may take most of the day.

Weaver said officials believe damage possibly was caused by a downburst or straight-line winds, but the National Weather Service will make the final assessment.
