There is a growing trend where young adults and teenagers are being scammed with the promise of making free or easy money, according to the Hall County Sheriff's Office.

A posting on the department's Facebook page says the victims, usually between 17 and 25, are told the scheme is legitimate and legal.

"Victims are approached by a friend or another teenager/young adult and convinced to sell/give their debit card or bank information to the scammer," according to the posting.  "The criminal then does fraudulent activity with the victim’s information, leaving the victim with a financial loss."

The full impact of what has happened and how serious it is take two forms.

"First, banks will not return money to the victim because of the victim’s involvement. Second, participation in the scam by selling or giving information makes the victim a party to a felony crime and subject to arrest."

The bottom line, according to the sheriff's office:  Stay smart. There is no such thing as free money, and if it seems too good to be true, it is.
