A Banks County deputy sheriff is undergoing treatment after being struck by a vehicle while on duty Friday night.

The male deputy, whose name has not been released, was chasing one of two men being arrested during a traffic stop, according to Sheriff’s Capt. Carissa McFaddin, Uniform Patrol commander.

“Right before 9 p.m., a Banks County deputy conducted a traffic stop on Steve Reynolds Industrial Parkway at Highway 441,” McFaddin said. “During the traffic stop, two suspects were arrested. One male arrestee then began to flee the scene on foot to which a Banks County deputy pursued him. In foot pursuit of the suspect, the deputy was struck by a vehicle.”

That deputy was taken by ambulance to Piedmont Athens Regional in Athens for treatment, McFaddin said. He is listed in stable condition.

“The fleeing suspect was apprehended and is currently being housed at Banks County Law Enforcement Center,” according to McFaddin.

The incident happened near the Banks/Jackson County line.

Cpl. Major D. Patterson of Georgia State Patrol Post 6 confirmed that post is assisting with the case, but referred inquiries to McFaddin.
