PLAYOFF WRAP: Branch, Union and Jefferson girls march into quarterfinals; Buford upset

Three northeast Georgia area girls soccer teams advanced to the Elite 8 round of the playoffs with wins on Wednesday.

In Class 4A, the Flowery Branch girls continued their impressive run taking a 2-1 victory over North Oconee at Falcons Field.

In Class 2A, the Union County girls also continued a strong playoff run with a 5-0 win over Gordon Central.

In Class 3A, the Jefferson girls took down Region 7-3A champ Dawson County on the road with a tough 2-0 win in Dawsonville. Meanwhile, Greater Atlanta Christian snapped Jackson County's long 12-game unbeaten streak in a 4-0 win over the Lady Panthers in Jefferson. The Lumpkin County girls fell to powerhouse Westminster 1-0 on the road.

In Class 5A, No. 3 Buford was stunned at home by Riverwood, 2-1, while the Johnson girls could not get past Carrollton in a 6-1 loss on the road.

In Class A Private, the Lakeview Academy girls could not advance to their first-ever semifinals as Holy Innocents' scored four unanswered goals in a 4-1 victory in Gainesville.

And, in Class A Public, the Towns County girls dropped a heartbreaking 3-2 decision to ACE Charter, losing 4-1 in penalty kicks after the game ended in a 2-2 draw at the end of regulation.

The loss snapped the Lady Indians (10-3) eight-match win streak.
