A basic request by White County Sheriff Neal Walden for an architectural service to design some safety updates and renovation at the White County Courthouse has resulted in county commissioners deciding to look at major renovations and additions to the facility on South Main Street in Cleveland.
During Monday's regular commission meeting, Sheriff Walden asked for BCA Studios to come up with a plan for a new entryway and sally port at the courthouse.
The commissioners have been batting around the idea for quite some time to possibly tear down the old jail facility located at the rear of the courthouse and construct a new, possibly two-story addition, which would include a new entrance to the courthouse facility.
Following some discussion, the commissioners agreed to seek some proposals for the initial design of the building. Money for the project has been approved by the citizens as part of the latest Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST).
This is the first step that will give the commissioners an idea of what will be needed to move the renovation forward, including the possible cost of the project.
