An Athens man was shot and killed by police officers over the weekend, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

The Athens-Clarke County Police Department called the GBI early Sunday morning to request assistance with the investigation.

The incident unfolded around 11:40 p.m. Saturday when a 911 caller reported a "Peeping Tom" incident at an address on Hull Road.

"The officers met with the caller and attempted to make contact with the other party, who resided at the 1249 Hull Road address. Officers knocked on the door and announced they were police officers," said GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles in a press statement. "Before answering the door, one of the officers saw a man inside with a weapon. The officers moved back from the door and gave repeated commands to put down the weapon."

Mile said the man inside, later identified as Carlton Steve Brooks, 63, opened the door with a shotgun in his hands. Brooks pointed the weapon towards one of the officers, who then fired twice.

Brooks died as a result of the shooting.

Miles said the officers were not injured.

Brooks' body was transported to the GBI Crime Lab for autopsy.
