Playoff tennis: GHS boys, Rabun girls advance; Rabun, Jackson County boys fall

GAINESVILLE — The Gainesville boys tennis team advanced to the second of the Class 6A playoffs with a 5-0 win over South Paulding Monday at Longwood Park.

The Red Elephants did not drop a set and lost just 11 games total in the five matches.

In singles, Dylan Pineda won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1, Philip Mady took a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 2, and Ben Burns dominated in a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3.

In the doubles, the No. 1 team of Michael Head and Caleb Anderson also won big with a 6-0, 6-0 victory and the No. 2 team of Joseph Diaz and Matthew Carter closed out the sweep with a 6-0, 6-2 win.

Gainesville next will play the winner of Johns Creek and River Ridge in the second round.

The Rabun County girls advanced to the second round of the Class 2A playoffs with a big win on the road Monday.

The Lady Wildcats already have made it one round further than 2018 when they were knocked off in the first round. Now, they will await the C.S. King-Model winner in the Sweet 16.

A Model victory would give the Lady Wildcats a home playoff match in the second round. They would hit the road again if C.S. King, the Region 6-2A champion, advances.

Meanwhile, the Rabun County boys fell to Region 5-2A champion Callway 5-0 in the first round on the road as well.

WESMINSTER BOYS 5,

The Panthers could not get past perennial power Westminster in the first round of Class 3A tournament at home. The Wildcats have won seven state titles over the past eight seasons.

Jackson County was trying to advance to the second round for a second consecutive season.

NOTES: The Buford boys already their second opponent, if they get past the first round in Class 5A. The Wolves are taking on Clarkston on Wednesday and if they advance they will take on Riverwood out of Atlanta.
