ROSWELL — Chestatee took No. 1 Blessed Trinity down to the wire before Ben Hamacher singled in Matthew McCaffrey in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Titans to a 2-1 victory in Region 7-4A action.
Blessed Trinity (23-5, 10-0 Region 7-4A) led 1-0 after the third inning but the War Eagles (12-12, 4-6 Region 7-4A) answered wih a run in the fourth on a Robbie James sacrifice fly scoring Benson Miller.
Miller was stellar on the mound for Chestatee needing just 78 pitches to go 6 1/3 innings. He scattered four hits and fanned three.
Chestatee outhit Blessed Trinity 7-4 as Miller had a pair of base-knocks. Will Cantrell, Phillip Lemay, Clay Tyas, Matthew Jarrard, and Nathan Bull all had one hit for the War Eagles.
CHEROKEE BLUFF 10,
LUMPKIN COUNTY 0
Carsen Plumadore scattered four hits, walked none and struck out three in getting the complete-game win in five innings in a crucial game for the Bears.
Cherokee Bluff (14-12, 8-8 Region 7-3A) scored three runs in the first, added a run in the third, and eventually blew it open with four runs in the fifth.
The Bears' Tyler Zawacki, Jacob Carlson, and Parker Shope all drove in runs in the fifth inning. Cherokee Bluff pounded out 10 hits with Jackson Kemp and Dylan Kautz both having multiple-hit games.
The win, along with Dawson County's loss to Greater Atlanta Christian, pushed the Bears into fourth place in the region standings with two games left.
The two teams will head to Dahlonega for Game 2 of the series on Wednesday.
GREATER ATLANTA CHRISTIAN 5,
DAWSON COUNTY 4
Dawson County could not hold an early 2-1 lead as the Spartans used a four-run third to grab the lead and hang on for a key Region 7-3A showdown in Dawsonville.
The Tigers (9-12, 7-9 Region 7-3A) needed a win to jump into a tie with GAC (13-10-1, 9-7 Region 7-3A) and stay in the playoff race. Instead, they fell two games back of the Spartans and one game behind Cherokee Bluff (14-12, 8-8 Region 7-3A) who knocked off Lumpkin County.
Dawson County outhit GAC 10-5 and scored two runs in the sixth to pull within 5-4 but could not get the equalizer.
The two teams will head to Norcross for Game 2 of the series on Wednesday.
NORTH HALL 12,
HEBRON CHRISTIAN 4
The Trojans rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to pull away for a non-region win at Jody Davis Field.
The North Hall pitchers -- Jackson Dyer, Dylan Wiley, and Jack Wiley -- combined on a four-hitter. Dyer allowed three runs on three hits and fanned five in four innings of work.
North Hall trailed the Lions 2-0 after the first but took the lead for good with a five-run second, highlighted by a two-run double from Caleb Clark. Clark and Caleb Wiley each had three hits and three RBI for North Hall.
After Hebron cut it to 5-3 in the third, the Trojans scored two in the fifth and blew it open with a five-run sixth, highlighted by a two-run double from Ty Brooks.
BUFORD 15,
CLARKE CENTRAL 0
The Wolves scored four runs in the first, five in the second, and six in the third to invoke the Mercy Rule after the third inning in a Region 8-5A game..
Ramsey David allowed just two hits and struck out seven in three innings for Buford (15-9, 5-2 Region 8-5A) to get the win.
Evan Place and Riley Stanford had two hits each while Pat Walker had a hit and three RBI and Brandon Jolliff highlighted the big third inning with a grand slam home run. Place seaed the win with a RBI bases-loaded walk.
WINDER-BARROW 9,
GAINESVILLE 3
The Red Elephants jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead against the No. 1-ranked Bulldoggs but could not hang on in the end in Region 8-6A play.
Winder-Barrow chipped away scoring single runs in the second, third, and fourth to ti the game and took the lead for good with two runs in the fifth. The Bulldoggs put the game away with four runs in the seventh.
Dalton Kyle had two of Gainesville's three hits. Corbin Lindsay had the other. Harris Bell, Ben Still, and Eudy Medina each had one RBI for the Red Elephants.
