OAKWOOD – Former Chestatee football coach and current Habersham Central defensive coordinator Stan Luttrell has been hired to lead the Johnson Knight football program.

Johnson Athletics Director Jonathan Edwards confirmed the hiring Monday afternoon to replace Jason Roquemore as head football coach, pending Hall County Board of Education approval.

Roquemore stepped down in February to take over the Towns County football program. Roquemore coached the Knights for seven seasons.

“Coach Luttrell has a great reputation of developing players and programs, and we are very excited to have a coach of his caliber as the leader of our football program,” Edwards said. “He is a man of high character and is a perfect fit for us here at Johnson. We are certainly excited about the future of Johnson Football.”

Luttrell is no stranger to Hall County football, having led Chestatee for eight seasons (2006-13). During his time as head coach at Chestatee, Luttrell led the War Eagles to the program’s first-ever playoff win. He was 46-38 in eight seasons, including a 17-6 record in his final two seasons.

“My family and I are excited about the opportunity to be the head football coach at Johnson High School,” Luttrell said. “My teaching and coaching career in Georgia started here 17 years ago when I was hired as the defensive coordinator and strength coach by Blair Armstrong in 2002. We have many great memories from our time back then and look forward to creating many new ones in the future.”

Luttrell has spent the last two seasons as associated head coach and defensive coordinator at Habersham Central in Mt. Airy.

Johnson Principal Stan Lewis is excited to have Luttrell at the helm of the football program.

“I have worked with Coach Luttrell in the past, so I know the quality of his character and the level of intensity he will bring to Johnson High School,” Lewis said. “From the weight room to the classroom, to the football field, and out in our community, there will be a standard of excellence expected. We look forward to watching our young men develop under Coach Luttrell’s leadership.”

Stan Luttrell talks with Chestatee football players during the 2013 campaign. Luttrell is leaving the War Eagles to accept a position with Buford High School.
