The Georgia Department of Transportation has selected Brandon Kirby as the new District One Engineer for the 21-county Northeast Georgia region.

Kirby, who has served dual roles as Assistant District Engineer and the head of preconstruction unit, will fill a position being vacated by Brent Cook, who is retiring.

Kirby will oversee all the department programs, projects and activities in the area, as well as will work to build partnerships with local and state lawmakers, chambers of commerce, business leaders and the public in the region.

After earning a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Kirby began his career with the GDOT in 1996. His broad experience of more than 22 years with GDOT includes progressing through various leadership titles in the District, as well as in the General Office. He has held positions of Area Engineer, Assistant District Construction Engineer, Legislative Liaison and Assistant State Program Delivery Administrator.

"I'm honored and humbled to have this opportunity to lead our team. We have a diverse region from Union County which has routes that wind around the Appalachian Mountains to urban areas like Gwinnett and Forsyth Counties. I know our region isn't without its transportation challenges," Kirby said in a press statement. "I will bring excellence and a commitment to leadership in transportation in everything we put our hands to.  We want to be known as approachable, committed to working together solving challenges and a credible community partner and resource."

Kirby is native to the Northeast Georgia region and lives in Hall County.

GDOT District One office is located in Gainesville on Jesse Jewell Parkway; the department maintains Area Offices in Gainesville, Athens, Carnesville and Cleveland.
