OAKWOOD —
Austin Garrison tossed a complete-game, four-hitter to lead Union County to a tight 3-2 victory over West Hall Monday in non-region action.
Garrison allowed two runs, just one earned, and struck out five and walked just one. He outdueled four West Hall pitchers -- Clayton Jenkins, Nick Sturm, Canaan Koger, and Braden Simms -- who surrendered nine hits but struck out 10 and walked none collectively.
Sturm, who went two innings, took the loss for the Spartans (6-11) who have dropped 10 straight after a six-game winning streak. Union County (6-8) pushed its winning streak to five straight with the win.
The Panthers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a West Hall error with two outs. The Spartans answered right back in the bottom of the inning on a Kyle Murphy ground out, scoring Jenkins.
It stayed that way until Union County scored a pair of unearned runs in the third inning. West Hall pulled within 3-2 in the fifth on a RBI hit by Jenkins scoring Braden Whisnant.
The Spartans could get no closer, however, as Garrison worked around two errors and a single over the final two innings to preserve the win.
Zeke Swartz had three hits and Isaak Mullinack two hits for the Panthers.
Simms, Koger, Jenkins, and Tyler Maynard each had one hit for West Hall.
