OAKWOOD — The Johnson soccer teams got a big Region 8-5A sweep of Walnut Grove at Billy Ellis Memorial Stadium on Tuesday.

The boys routed the Warriors 9-0  in a 60 min shortened game. That came after the Lady Knights took a tough 4-3 victory in the opening game.

For the boys, the defense was once again stellar not only getting its fourth shutout of the season but also not allowing a single shot on goal in the match.

Junior Arellano recorded a hat trick and added an assist. Cole Bowen and Edgar Lopez each booted in a pair of goals with Juan Carlos Gomez and Jeffrey Castillo each adding a goal and an assist for Johnson. Jorge Santos and Jonathan Miralrio had one assist apiece.

The defending Class 5A state champions and currently fifth-ranked Knights improved to 9-2 overall and a perfect 3-0 in Region 8-5A.

Meanwhile, the Lady Knights (5-5, 2-1 Region 8-5A) won for the third time in four matches holding off the Lady Warriors (7-4, 2-2) in a battle for second place in the standings.

Dani Malone paced the offense with two goals while Jenna Degroot and Maria Rivera had one goal each. Eva Lesutis and Eileen Cruz contributed to the offensive attack and Johnson used a strong midfield performance from several to pull off the big win.

Both teams will be back in action on Friday playing host to Cedar Shoals in another Region 8-5A showdown.
