CORNELIA – The Cornelia City Commission invites the public to join them at city hall at noon Tuesday, March 19, for groundbreaking ceremonies for the new city hall/police and fire facilities off South Main Street.
“This project is long overdue,” said City Manager Donald Anderson. “The city has discussed the need for a new city hall for over 20 years. The new facilities have been designed to accommodate growth and serve the city’s needs for at least the next 50 years.”
Jericho Design Group, Carter & Sloope Engineering, and Cooper & Company General Contractors have been selected as the city’s partners for the project, which includes construction of a stand-alone fire station, as well as a new city hall and police complex.
“The new structures will feature increased security for the public safety areas, as well as improved administration areas for city hall,” Anderson said.
Those attending the groundbreaking should assemble at the corner of Foreacre Street and South Main Street by noon Tuesday.
The current Cornelia Municipal Building, which includes the fire station and courtroom, is some 70 years old and originally included the fire and police departments, city hall offices and library. The current city hall formerly served as the city library, and the current police department was constructed as a health department.
The four bids for the project ranged from $8,960,000 to $10,742,527, with the low bid of $8,960,000 submitted by Cooper & Company.
Completion of the project is slated for the end of 2020.
