Baseball: Riverside, Habersham, Commerce, Jefferson win; Chestatee and East Jackson fall

GAINESVILLE – Riverside held off a seventh-inning rally to pick up it’s first Region 8-A win, 6-4, over Towns County Tuesday afternoon at home. 

The Indians took advantage of the Riverside miscues in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs off an error and two passed balls, but JP Seymour struck out the final two Towns’ batters to stop the run.

Treston Turner grabbed the win for the Eagles, striking out eight Indians in six innings of work. Seymour picked up the save with one inning of working, allowing no runs while striking out three. 

Riverside (8-5,1-1) jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning off a single by Gregory Stroyne, a walk by Tyler Martin and a groundout by Malique Charlton. The Eagles added two more runs, one in the fourth and one in the sixth inning. 

Riverside will travel to Hebron Christian Friday. Game time is 4:30 p.m.

Towns County (4-4, 0-1) will host Athens Academy Friday at 5 p.m.


HABERSHAM CENTRAL 9,
RABUN COUNTY 0

Habersham Central’s trip to Rabun County was a quick one.

The Raiders (11-3) hammered out 9 runs off six hits to shutout Rabun County Tuesday afternoon on the road. 

Payton Irvin pitched five innings of flawless baseball, allowing one hit and seven strikeouts. Irvin also recorded two RBI at the plate. 

Cervantes was 1-for-2 with two RBI, and Ryte Woodruff,  Christian King, Logan Hare and Colby Jones drove in one run each.

The Raiders scored two runs in first, four in the second and two each in the third and fourth innings. 

 

NORTH OCONEE 5,
CHESTATEE 2

The War Eagles couldn’t come back from a five-run third inning by North Oconee in a loss at home Tuesday afternoon.

Chestatee, however, scored first, with two runs in the second inning off a Clay Tyas single, scoring Christian Charles and Benson Miller. Tyas finished the day 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI.

The Titans rally in the third started with a W Barks double to left field. The next at-bat, D Hughes singled to score Barks. North Oconee scored three more runs, off two hits to blow open the non-region contest. 


HART COUNTY 5,
EAST JACKSON 1

Hart County scored three runs in the fifth inning to blow past East Jackson Tuesday afternoon at home. 

The two region foes battled each other for three innings tied, 1-1, when the Bulldogs scored three runs in the fifth. Hart added one more run in the bottom of the sixth to secure the Region 8-3A win. 

Dylan Varner led the Eagles at the play, going 2-for-2 with one RBI. 

Peyton Powell pitched six winning innings for the Bulldogs, giving up one run on three hits while striking out six. 

East Jackson’s Halton Hardy gave up three earned runs on eight hits and struck out four in the loss.

 

COMMERCE 3,
OGLETHORPE 2

The Tigers snagged the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning to knock off Oglethorpe County Tuesday at home. 

With the game tied 2-2, Colby Rogers stole home to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead and the eventual win.

Rogers went 3-for-3 at the plate with three stolen bases. The Tigers were hot on the bases, racking up six stolen bases. 

Along with his stellar batting performance, Rogers also picked up the victory for Tigers on the mound, going one and one-third innings, allowing zero runs on zero hits and striking out one.

Nate Ray, who started the game for the Tigers lasted five innings, allowing four hits and zero runs while striking out seven and walking one.

Commerce (6-3) will host Lake Oconee Academy Wednesday. First pitch is 5:55 p.m.

 

JEFFERSON 2,
STEPHENS COUNTY 1

Cole Watkins single in the top of the ninth inning drove home the winning run to lift Jefferson past Stephens County Tuesday on the road. 

Watkins scored Brycen Jewell for the eventual game-winning run. 

Stephens County left two runners on in the bottom of the ninth. 

Lane Watson started the game for the Dragons, giving up one run on four hits and nine strikeouts in seven innings of work. Jewell picked up the win in two innings, allowing two hits, no runs while striking out three. 

Jefferson scored one run in the third and one in the ninth. 

Trey McEver was 3-for-4 at the plate for the Dragons. Zac Corbin was 1-for4 with one RBI. 

Jefferson (9-0, 3-0) will host  Stephens County on Thursday. Game time is 5:55 p.m.
