ATHENS — Georgia junior outfielder Tucker Maxwell,a former Dawson County standout, has been named National Player of the Week by the publication Collegiate Baseball as well as the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week by the league office, it was announced Monday.
A 6-0, 175-pound native of Dawsonville, Ga., Maxwell batted .563 (9-for-16) with three home runs, 15 RBI and eight stolen bases to lead Georgia to a perfect 5-0 record last week. He tied a school record with four stolen bases in Georgia's 11-3 win over Alabama State last Tuesday and then did it again in a 7-6 win over Presbyterian last Saturday. Also, in that win over the Blue Hose, he delivered a clutch, two-out, game-tying two-run single in the bottom of the eighth.
Maxwell's three home runs last week consisted of a two-run blast, a three-run shot and his first career grand slam. Defensively, he registered six putouts in five starts in centerfield. For the year, he is batting .349-4-20 and is nine-for-nine in stolen base attempts. Maxwell has played in 15 games with 12 starts.
