MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. --- The 12th-ranked Georgia men's golf team stands sixth after two rounds of the General Hackler Championship.
On Monday on the Dunes Golf & Beach Club’s par-72, 7,233-yard layout, Georgia recorded rounds of 1-under 287 and 4-under 284 for a total of 5-under 571. North Florida has the team lead at 22-under 554, followed by Wake Forest and Liberty both at 18-under 558.
Sophomore Davis Thompson and freshman Trent Phillips paced the Bulldogs on Monday as each landed at 3-under 141. They are in the group tied for 11th, eight strokes shy of North Florida’s Travis Trace. Phillips signed for a first-round 4-under 68 -- his 12th loop this year in the 60s -- while Thompson posted a second-round 5-under 67.
Junior and former Gainesville High standout Spencer Ralston is tied for 17th at 2-under 142, including his second-round 70. Junior Trevor Phillips wound up at 3-over 147, followed by freshman Will Kahlstorf at 6-over 150.
While the Bulldogs were playing Monday, Trent Phillips was named to the 29-man spring watch list for the Haskins Award, which is presented annually to the nation’s top collegiate player. The watch list will be pared to 15 in April and to 10 in May, with the award presentation slated for June.
Competing as an individual, junior Will Chandler came in at 2-over 146, including a 2-under 70 in the first round.
The General Hackler Championship will conclude with 18 holes on Tuesday. The Bulldogs then will compete in the Linger Longer Invitational at The Landing Golf Course (par 72, 6,991 yards) in Greensboro, Ga., Friday through Sunday.
