Governor Brian P. Kemp on Monday morning issued an Executive Order declaring a state of emergency for Grady, Harris and Talbot counties following severe thunderstorms and possible tornadoes that hit the area Sunday.

The declaration allows for the quick release of state assistance to the three counties and activates the Georgia Emergency Operations Plan.

"With extensive storm damage in Grady, Harris and Talbot counties, it is imperative that we take swift action to help affected Georgians and deploy state resources in ongoing response and recovery efforts," Kemp said in a press statement."Throughout this process, I have received regular updates from state and local leaders. Based on this information, I will travel to affected areas this afternoon with emergency management personnel to witness the damage firsthand."

Kemp is expected to leave Atlanta via helicopter at 1 p.m.
