GWINNETT COUNTY – Two dozen local volunteers teamed up with members of Gwinnett County Department of Fire and Emergency Services on Saturday, going door-to-door, offering free smoke alarms to residents in the Firethorn North neighborhood of Loganville.
According to a media release from Gwinnett Fire Chief/Director Russell Knick fifty homes were visited by firefighters and volunteers during the “Smoke Alarm and Fire Safety Blitz” outreach, providing smoke alarms where needed, inspecting and checking batteries in homes where alarms were already present, and providing a limited number of rescue ladders.
According to Knick the campaign was made possible by the Gwinnett Citizen Fire Academy Alumni Association and funds from Walton EMC.
In 2018 Gwinnett Firefighters responded to 655 reports of fires in single family dwellings. Knick said that number increases to 1555 when factoring in fires or reports of smoke in multi-family residences.
Gwinnett fire officials encourage households to develop a home fire escape plan and to always follow proper fire safety practices. A free home survey and smoke alarm inspection is available to Gwinnett County residents at [email protected].
