Gainesville realtor, philanthropist Don Carter dies at 86

The man who led a years-long effort to bring a state park to Hall County has died at the age of 86.

Don Carter, the founder of Don Carter Realty in Gainesville, died at his home on Thursday, Feb. 7.  

Carter was a longtime member of the state Department of Natural Resources Board, serving for 29 years. His dream of bringing a state park to Hall County became a reality in September 2013. The park, located on Clarks Bridge Road on Lake Lanier, was named in Carter's honor.

Among his many honors, Carter was presented with the Gainesville Jaycees Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013,

From 1966 to 1970, Carter served as a member of the Gainesville City Commission, which in now Gainesville City Council. 

Funeral services for Don Carter are pending. Little & Davenport Funeral Home will handle arrangements.
