An incident in Forsyth County Friday sent 8,640 gallons of sewage into an "unnamed" tributary, according to county officials.
They report that the spill occurred at a manhole behind 5860 Stoneleigh Drive in Cumming.
"The main cause was determined to be grease and cleaning rags," according to a notice that was posted late Friday. "The Forsyth County Department of Water and Sewer was notified at 11:30 a.m. and the overflow was stopped at 1:54 p.m. The spill was approximately 8,640 gallons in volume and entered an unnamed tributary."
The state Environmental Protection Division was notified and "to help mitigate the effects of the spill, Forsyth County raked the area and spread lime," the notice says.
In addition, signs have been placed in the area to alert the public about the spill.
