Boys basketball: Dawson, Bluff, Buford take region wins; East Jackson falls

DAWSONVILLE — Luke Chism and Jasper Gibson both recorded double-doubles to lead Dawson County to a 68-49 win over East Hall Friday night in both teams' regular-season finale.

Chism had 27 points, 14 rebounds, and added 8 blocks while Gibson had 15 points and 11 rebounds as the Tigers (21-4, 10-2 Region 7-3A) used a 17-8 second quarter to pull away for a 30-19 halftime lead after a tight first quarter. They took a 46-35 lead into the fourth quarter and piled on with a 22-14 finish.

Campbell Reed and Eli Burruss each had 8 points for Dawson County.

 

CHEROKEE BLUFF 54,
NORTH HALL 41

The Bears overcame a rough first quarter to close out their first-ever regular season in style with a big Region 7-3A win.

Griffin Neville poured in 24 points, 20 coming in the second half, as Cherokee Bluff (15-10, 6-6 Region 7-3A) outscored the Trojans 31-18 over the second and third quarters to erase a 16-8 deficit and take a 39-34 lead into the fourth quarter.

Neville was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line, including going 6-of-6 in the fourth quarter as the Bears pulled away late. Bosko Norman added 10 points for Cherokee Bluff.

Daniel Jackon led North Hall (11-14, 6-6 Region 7-3A) with 19 points.

Both teams next will play in the Region 7-3A tournament. The first round will be Tuesday at Dawson County with North Hall holding the No. 3 seed and the Bears the No. 4 seed.

 

MONROE AREA 60,
EAST JACKSON 37 

Jay Watson, Jimmie Jackson, and Shawn Cunningham all had 9 points for the Eagles in a Region 8-3A loss to the Purple Hurricanes as both teams closed their regular season schedule.

Both teams will be back in action next week in the Region 8-3A tournament at Hart County High School in Hartwell.

 

BUFORD 73
CLARKE CENTRAL 40

Clarke Central kept pace with the No. 1-ranked Wolves for just over eight minutes Friday night at Buford City Arena. Then, Buford turned the jets on.

The Wolves went on a 12-2 run to take a 37-22 lead at the half. Buford outscored the Gladiators 36-18 in the second half. 

Coleman led the Wolves with 17 points. Nixon had 16 and Watson added 10.

Buford (22-2, 9-1) will be the No. 1 seed in next week’s region tournament to be held at Walnut Grove. The Wolves will have a first-round bye and automatically advance to the Class 5A state playoffs later on this month.
