Eighth-grader captures Gainesville schools' Spelling Bee

Emily Mosqueda-Calderon is the winner of this year's Gainesville City School System Spelling Bee.

An 8th-grader at Gainesville Middle School, Mosqueda-Calderon took first place after successfully spelling "conservatory" in the fifth round of competition.   Seventh-grader Issac Massey was runner-up, and Emily Maya, a 6th-grader, finished third.

These three will represent the middle school at the district spelling bee on Feb. 7 at the Gainesville Board of Education Office.

There were 20 contestants in the GMS competition:  Josiah Thompson, Emily Maya, Sonny Phan, Molly Collins, Ngan Nguyen, Sergio Garcia Moreno, Jose Rodriguez, Isaac Massey, Vincent Keisel, Amy Sica-Vicente, Shariyah Bledson, Joseph Hernandez-Tovar, Henry Bonilla, Miguel Herrera, Emily Mosqueda-Calderon, Rodney Jackson, Dariel Terrero, Joella Monzanga, and Marvin Medina.
