Sunday, the final day of the final weekend before Christmas, is expected to be a busy one for retailers across the country, and for shoppers in Georgia, it's shaping up to be a cold, soggy, blustery day. And, not much improvement is expected Monday
The National Weather Service is forecasting highs only in the 40sand 50s both days in north Georgia, with strong, gusty winds, and torrential, at times, rains. At mid-afternoon Saturday, in fact, a High Wind Watch and Flood Watch were issued for parts of north and central Georgia.
Rainfall through Tuesday morning is expected to total 2-3 inches in Gainesville and the rest of north Georgia, with higher amounts, 3-4 inches, through much of central and south Georgia. Some places on the Georgia coast may pick up 4-6 inches, according to forecasters. The greatest threat of flooding is along and south of the I-20 and I-85 corridors. Look for the heavy rainfall to begin overnight Saturday, with the heaviest showers occurring Sunday and Sunday night.
As for the winds, gusts as high as 40-45 miles-an-hour are forecast for places like Athens and Gainesville and a few other places, with 45-50 miles-an-hour possible in Atlanta.
After the weather system bringing all this rain and wind to the state moves out, dry and unseasonably warm weather should move into Georgia for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
