Seven people were taken to the hospital Monday morning after a fire broke out in their apartment off Jesse Jewell Parkway in Gainesville.

According to Gainesville Division Fire Chief Kevin Smith, four adults and three children were asleep inside the unit in Building J at Lanier Terrace Apartments when Gainesville firefighters arrived.

"All occupants were transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center for smoke inhalation and evaluation," Smith said.

The immediate condition of the victims remains unknown at this time.

According to Smith, the cause of the fire was due to combustibles being too close to a space heater — as well as having no working smoke alarms in the apartment.

"The Gainesville Fire Department would like to encourage everyone to ensure they have working smoke alarms in their homes and to check all smoke alarms once a month," Smith said. "If you live within the city limits of Gainesville, you can call 770-534-3612 for a free smoke alarm installation."
