An 80-year-old man who was killed in a crash with a school bus in North Gwinnett County on Wednesday afternoon might have had a medical emergency prior to the accident.

Investigators with the Gwinnett County Police Department identified the victim in the accident as Darwin McEntyre of Buford.

"Based on the preliminary investigation, it appears as though the driver of the SUV [McEntyre] was traveling north on Hamilton Mill Road while the bus was traveling south," said Gwinnett Police Cpl. Michele Pihera in a press statement. "While approaching the traffic light near Cascade Falls Drive, the SUV driver suddenly lost control of his vehicle, crossed in to oncoming traffic, and struck the bus head-on."

Pihera said McEntyre died at the scene.

The driver of the school bus and another adult on the bus were treated at the scene for minor injuries. The five children on board, ranging in age from 3 to 7, were not injured.

An article in the Gwinnett Daily Post said the children were on their way home from Ivy Creek Elementary School.

The fatal collision happened around 3 p.m.
