Tim Stamey will fill the unexpired term of now-former District 5 Habersham County Commissioner Ed Nichols.
Stamey defeated Darren Johnston in the Dec. 3 Special Election Runoff for the seat, receiving 1,237 votes (57.11%) to Johnston’s 929 votes (42.89%).
Only 8.22% (2,169) of the county’s 26,374 registered voters cast ballots in the race.
A seventh-generation Habersham County native, Stamey was a master sergeant in the U.S. Air Force Special Operations and served as Joint Terminal Attack Controller.
He received a bachelor’s degree in business administration and describes himself as very conservative.
Identifying as a conservative, Johnston is a Habersham County-based consultant, following 23 years with one of the largest housewares corporations in the world. He currently is a member of the Habersham County Development Authority, president of the Habitat for Humanity of Northeast Georgia, a member of the Habersham County Board of Ethics and an elder at First Presbyterian Church of Clarkesville.
Habersham County Elections Supervisor said no provisional ballots were cast in the Special Election, meaning certification could take place Thursday or Friday of this week.
Johnston took to social media to congratulate Stamey Tuesday night.
“I want to be one of the first to say congratulations to Tim Stamey on becoming the next commissioner for Habersham County,” Johnston’s post states. “You have my full support, and I will do all in my power to support you and your success."
