A fisherman discovered a submerged minivan in Lake Lanier on Sunday afternoon, and the body of a missing Forsyth County man was inside.

Cpl. Doug Rainwater with the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office said the fisherman saw the vehicle in the water and called 911 just before 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

"[It was] about 30 yards away from the shore and about 20 yards deep," Rainwater said.

He described the area at the end of Beaver Ruin Road as a difficult place to find.

"The only way you can get to this little area where the van drove into the water is a little dirt rocky road," Rainwater said.

He did not speculate on the reason the man, identified as 56-year-old Van Dobbs of Forsyth County, ended up in the lake, saying only that foul play is not suspected in the death. Dobbs' body was taken to the GBI Crime Lab for autopsy.

Rainwater said Dobbs had been reported missing back in June. He said deputies were able to use the tag number on the van to help identify Dobbs. He said the victim also was wearing the same clothes as when he was last seen.
