Helen reminds merchants of holiday lighting requirements

HELEN – Alpine Helen is consistently recognized as one of the state’s top Christmas towns.

And city officials remind business and building owners that they must do their part to help the city maintain its consistent holiday appearance.

“This is just a reminder to all city of Helen business owners,” an email sent to merchants Thursday afternoon reads. “In order to make the city look great for the holiday season, lights must edge the rooflines of any commercial building that is visible from the city street, Ga. Highway 75, or from any other right-of-way within the city. In addition, blown bulbs and sagging wires need to be repaired.”

According to city ordinance, lights must be operational from Nov. 22, 2019, until Feb. 29, 2020. That takes in the Christmas season and continues through Fasching.

“Please look at your lights on a regular basis to ensure they remain attractive and well-maintained,” the city reminder reads.

Helen business owners who have questions about the city’s lighting requirements should contact Building and Zoning Administrator Darrell Westmoreland or City Manager Jerry Elkins at (706) 878-2733.

City ordinance requires Helen merchants to edge their buildings with lights from just prior to Thanksgiving until the end of February, after the city's Fasching celebration concludes.
