An intersection rehabilitation project at a busy Gainesville intersection has now entered the utility work phase, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.

GDOT spokeswoman Katie Strickland said crews have begun the process of moving some underground water and sewer lines at Jesse Jewell Parkway (SR 369) where it intersects with John Morrow Parkway (SR 53 Conn) and Queen City Parkway (SR 60).

"We're in the utility phase. Before all of our construction [crews] can move in and start working, they have to move some of the water and sewer lines underneath the roadway," Strickland said.

She said motorists will notice a large pit being dug on the side of the intersection where Dunkin Donuts is located. Also, metal plates have been placed in the road on the SR 60 approach to SR 369.

"Once they get done with the utility phase, then our contractor will able move in and we'll have a better [idea of a] date that we can move in for construction," said Strickland.

She said the improvement project for the area will address a severely congested intersection in the City of Gainesville. Projected completion date for the project is Oct. 31, 2020.
