A pedestrian hit by a car in Buford on Oct. 27 has died from his injuries and now the driver of the vehicle is facing additional charges in the case.

The Gwinnett County Police Department said Geoffrey Frankovich, 65, of Lawrenceville was in the crosswalk in front of Walmart on Sardis Church Road around 7:30 a.m. when he was hit by a Nissan Versa. The driver of the car, identified as 20-year-old Mario De Paz Hurtarte of Buford, fled the scene and was then involved in another crash at Hamilton Mill Road and Sardis Church Road, according to investigators. He then returned to the scene of the original incident.

According to a police report, witnesses said Hurtarte was driving through the parking lot at speeds of 30 to 35 mph.

Frankovich was taken to Northside-Gwinnett Hospital for treatment, but police said he succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday, Nov. 5.

Hurtarte was charged on Oct. 27 on charges of reckless driving, hit and run, no license plate, improper class of license and failure to obey traffic control device. Police said additional charges could be forthcoming in light of Frankovich's death.
