Flowery Branch Police are warning of a scam in which a caller, using the department's phone number, is trying to collect money under threat of arrest.
"Over the course of the past couple of days we have been notified that our department phone number 770-967-6336 is being used to contact citizens and advise them that they are needing so send money or purchase green dot cards or they will be arrested," reads a posting on the department's Facebook page. "We DO NOT accept payments over the phone and we do not ask for personal information over the phone. Please be aware that this is going on and do not provide any vital information to anyone that calls from this number."
Green Dot is an online banking service.
Police say the phone number still works and should be used if you need to call the department about a non-emergency matter.
"If you have an active case and need to contact us this number still works as it should when you call us. Or if you need immediate assistance please call 911. Thank you and we apologize that someone is trying to use our information to scam others."
