MACON — Big changes are coming from the Georgia High School Association after Monday's executive committee meeting.
Top of the agenda was the GHSA voting to apply a 2.0 multiplier to out-of-district enrollment when trying to set classifications for schools beginning with the 2020 school year. But the executive committee did not stop there. The committee also voted, 46-21, to approve a school being jumped two classes as a result of the multiplier when it dictates to do so.
That move came against the reclassification committee's recommendation in August to limit schools to just a one-classification jump.
The 2.0 multiplier will count any student who lives outside a school's attendance twice for reclassification purposes. No one knows for sure how many schools that could affect. The new enrollment numbers are not expected to be known until later this fall.
However, rumors of the GHSA dropping from its current seven region format were just that. The committee voted to keep the current seven classifications. The current parameters have Class 7A making up the largest 10 percent of schools with Class A making up the smallest 20 percent of schools.
The committee also approved splitting Class A into eight private-school regions and eight public-school regions and also voted to eliminate the power rating system beginning with the 2020 school year.
Other news not related to football, the GHSA also mandated three-person officiating crews for basketball beginning in 2020. For baseball and softball, Game 3 of best-of-three series will no longer be decided by a coin flip. The higher-seeded team will now be the home team in a Game 3 and that rule will take effect immediately with the softball playoffs set to begin next week.
And, the GHSA also approved raises for officials in all sports.
