*Retiring Gainesville Police Chief Carol Martin has been awarded the “Law Enforcement Commendation Medal” by the Sons of the American Revolution for her dedication to the law enforcement profession for the past 32 years.

*The Dahlonega Literary Festival returns March 1-2, 2019 -- kicking off  Friday night with a Songwriters Café featuring local singer-songwriters as well as Ray Atkins, author of Set List, a novel and ending with a headliner event by renown writer Rebecca Wells Saturday afternoon. *The WorkSource Georgia Mountains Career Coach will visit The Place Of Forsyth in Cumming Wednesday, February 6, from 10 AM – 2 PM.   Representatives will be on hand to help anyone search and apply for jobs, write resumes and cover letters, discern their career interests, and learn about funded training opportunities. There will also be a job fair inside “The Place” from 2 PM – 4 PM.

*Frank Riley, Executive Director of the Demorest-based Chestatee-Chattahoochee RC&D is the winner of this year's Superior Professional Support Award from the Georgia Association of Conservation Districts. Riley was recognized at GACD’s Hall of Fame Banquet held January 19 at Lake Lanier Islands Resort.

*Northside Hospital is kicking off its 2019 calendar of community cancer screenings. The first two will be at Northside Hospital Forsyth in Cumming: Feb. 21 – free prostate cancer screening and  March 14 – free skin cancer screening.

*On Monday, Georgia DOT maintenance crews will begin grading work on the shoulders of I-85 northbound beginning at State Route 98 in Commerce. This will create a daily single lane closure through the end of the month, Monday-Thursday, 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. between State Route 98 and Martin Bridge Rd./SR 63.
