A man who ran back into his burning Lawrenceville home to save his dog suffered minor injuries Friday morning.

Gwinnett County firefighters were called to the scene on Ashbrook Drive just after 2 a.m.

"Crews arrived to find heavy flames showing from the center portion of a single-story, wood-frame house on a slab all the way over to the garage. The fire had already vented the roof.,"  said Gwinnett County Fire Department spokesman Donald Strother in a press statement. "Aerial operations had to be used in order to assist in extinguishing the fire."

Strother said two residents were inside the house asleep when the fire broke out.

He said the woman was awakened by the smell of smoke, and when she went to investigate, she saw black smoke coming from the garage.

"A second resident was asleep in the back of the house and was also awakened," Strother said. "As both occupants evacuated the structure, the second resident made the decision to go back inside to rescue his dog.  He was able to retrieve his dog but also sustained minor burns."

Strother said the dog did not survive. Two other pets also were killed in the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
