Former GOP gubernatorial candidate pleads not guilty to filing false report, other charges

Former candidate for governor Michael Williams pleaded not guilty to charges he filed a false report of a theft from his campaign office.

Williams requested a jury trial ahead of an arraignment hearing Wednesday, according to a report in the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

The charges stem from an incident in May when Williams reported his Gainesville campaign office was burglarized, and that $300,000 worth of computer servers mining crypto currency were taken.

The paper reports Williams is accused of lying to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation on where he was during the alleged burglary, and the indictment also accuses him of making a false insurance claim related to the servers. The AJC said the indictment didn't say what actually happened to the devices.

Williams, a Republican, finished fifth in the May primary and was a member of the Georgia State Senate, succeeded by Greg Dolezal. He often remembered for his "deportation bus" commercial.
