Officials confirm first rabies case of 2019 in Habersham

Posted 10:20PM on Friday 11th January 2019 ( 5 years ago )

CLARKESVILLE — Two Habersham County dogs that came in contact with a rabid raccoon will be in a 45-day home observation following that encounter.

“On Jan. 9, Habersham County Animal Care and Control was notified of an incident involving two canines coming into contact with a raccoon on Richland Terrace in Clarkesville,” said Animal Care and Control Director Madi Nix on Friday.

Officer Mitchael Jenkins responded to the scene and retrieved the deceased raccoon, which was submitted to the health department for rabies testing.

On Friday, Jan. 11, Habersham County Animal Care and Control received confirmation that the raccoon tested positive for the rabies virus.

Because both canines involved were current on rabies vaccinations, they will be allowed to remain at home in a 45-day home observation, according to Nix.

This is the first confirmed case of rabies in the county for 2019.

“Habersham County Animal Care and Control urges pet owners to make sure their pets are up to date on rabies vaccinations,” Nix said. “Rabies vaccinations must be administered by a licensed veterinarian.”
