GAINESVILLE – Hall County and the City of Gainesville held a joint memorial service to honor those who lost their lives in the September 11th terrorist attack on our nation 17 years ago.
Nearly 100 city and county first responders, spectators and city and county leaders observed a moment of silence under gray skies at the Public Safety Monument in Gainesville’s Roosevelt Square. The flag was lowered to half-staff and a fire station bell sounded fifteen times, its metallic tone reverberating between the Downtown Brenau Center and the city government building.
Gainesville Mayor Danny Dunagan spoke briefly, saying, “Today we gather to remember those that lost their lives and honor those brave first responders that gave so much to rescue the injured.”
Dunagan called it a day he will never forget and spoke of how vividly he recalls where he was and what he was doing as the events unfolded. More than 3,000 people died that day in New York City, at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and aboard a jetliner that was brought to the ground in Pennsylvania by courageous passengers determined not to let hijackers use the aircraft as a weapon of destruction.
Of those perishing that day, 343 were firefighters and 60 were law enforcement officers.
