The Georgia State Patrol has charged a South Carolina man in the wreck that claimed the life of a Cornelia man and seriously injured a woman near Mt. Airy Sunday afternoon.
The wreck happened at 3:37 p.m. on Ga. 365 at Tommy Irvin Road near Mt. Airy.
Robert Daniel Weir, 19, of Six Mile, S.C., was driving his 2005 Saturn Relay minivan eastbound on Ga. 17 and entered the intersection with Ga. 365 northbound on a red traffic light, according to GSP Post 7 in Toccoa.
A 1996 Toyota Camry driven by Kevin Brian Pasley, 65, of Cornelia was traveling northbound on Ga. 365 in the left lane and entered the intersection on a green traffic light, according to GSP. The front bumper of the Saturn struck the driver’s door of the Camry.
After impact, the Camry traveled off the road, across the east shoulder and through a pasture fence before entering a plowed field. The car continued across the field before entering into a small pond, where it came to rest facing east.
The minivan rotated counter-clockwise after impact and came to rest on a concrete island on the northeast corner of the intersection facing west.
Pasley died at the scene. His passenger, 63-year-old Tina Genevieve Pasley of Cornelia, was taken by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center with serious injuries, according to GSP.
Weir, who was not injured, now is charged by GSP with second-degree vehicular homicide, driving while license suspended or revoked, and failure to obey a traffic control device.
Weir’s passenger, 16-year-old Melina Honeycutt of Six Mile, S.C., was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center with minor injuries, according to GSP.
