A shooting death, initially thought to be a suicide, is now considered a murder, according to Gainesville Police Department detectives.
Sgt. Kevin Holbrook said officers were called to the Glen Cove Apartments off Park Hill Drive around 2 p.m. Thursday.
"Initially, the shooting was reported to 911 as a self-inflicted gunshot wound and/or an accidental shooting," Holbrook said.
Holbrook says Carly Andrews, 26, was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in critical condition, but later died at the hospital.
As the investigation into Andrews' death unfolded, detectives determined that someone else had pulled the trigger.
"Information developed that led to murder warrants being obtained for Christopher Vargas Zayas," Holbrook said.
Holbrook said the victim and the suspect were believed to be boyfriend and girlfriend. At this point, detectives have not said what the motive in the murder might have been.
At last report, Zayas remained in custody.
