Man struck, killed along I-85 in Jackson County

A collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian left a man in his 20's dead Tuesday afternoon along I-85 in Jackson County, officials said.

The incident happened at 1:49 p.m. near Ga. 53 in the Braselton area, said Chief Ben Stephens with the West Jackson Fire Department.

"We arrived on scene and found one person in the roadway deceased. The preliminary information is that the person was not in a vehicle at the time they were struck," said Stephens.

The man's identity has not been released, and the Georgia State Patrol is investigating the crash.

The subsequent backup and on-looker delays spawned another wreck that passersby might have seen, though it didn't result in any serious injuries, according to Stephens.

"It ended up being an overturned vehicle accident about a quarter mile behind [the original incident] on the southbound side, so that added to the traffic delays," said Stephens.

It's unclear if the victim was walking along the side of the road, or doing something like changing a tire on the shoulder.
