Gas prices down in Georgia ahead of Labor Day holiday

Posted 7:09AM on Monday 27th August 2018 ( 6 years ago )

Georgia gas prices dropped three cents last week, with the state average declining for the 20th consecutive day on Sunday.

This comes ahead of the Labor Day weekend, the final holiday of the summer travel season. AAA reports in their weekly fuel price report that the state average is $2.69, which is at the same level as last year's Labor Day holiday.

"Pump prices are 40-50 cents higher than a year ago, but that spread will be erased by Labor Day," said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA. "Holiday travelers will find pump prices at around the same level as last year. In 2017, gas prices spiked before Labor Day, after Hurricane Harvey struck the Gulf Coast. This year, motorists should benefit from a relatively quiet hurricane season along the east coast. Although pump prices may fluctuate with surging holiday demand, AAA does not forecast a significant hike, unless there is an unexpected disruption in supply."

Gainesville and surrounding areas did not make AAA's top or bottom three for prices this week, with Hall County's average at $2.63.

The highest prices in Atlanta at $2.74, Brunswick at $2.70 and Savannah at $2.69; The lowest price was $2.56 in Augusta-Aiken, followed by Warner Robins at $2.58 and Albany at $2.59

GasBuddy.com, however, counters that prices are only down 1.3 cents to $2.65 in Georgia.

"Gas prices nationally saw little change in the last week as oil prices saw a mini-resurgence back to $69 per barrel, stifling the broad relief we saw at pumps the week prior," said Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy. "With Labor Day dead ahead, we may see a small rise in the national average this week, depending on oil's move, but largely, this seems like the last week we'll see elevated prices as demand is set to drop with the conclusion of Labor Day weekend. The Atlantic remains quiet, so there's little chance of a major disruption for the time being, with the overall consensus that we'll soon see prices falling once again across most of the country."
