All of the Cohutta Wilderness in Georgia, including the Cottonwood Patch Campground, have been closed to the public temporarily.
The closure is due to "significant wind and flood event July 21" and hazards from trees that were blown down, U.S. Forest Service - Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests officials advised in a Facebook post.
The closure includes Jacks River Trail and the entire section of the Benton MacKaye Trail in the Cohutta Wilderness, as well as all other trails.
For the Benton MacKaye Trail, officials advised using an alternate route, such as Forest Road 221 to Forest Road 65, to Forest Road 22 down to Watson’s Gap where you can pick up the trail again outside the Wilderness.
