McDowell, Hedgecock win to open Southern Nationals

Dale McDowell and Cory Hedgecock got the 2018 Schaeffer’s Oil Southern Nationals Series off to a roaring start with wins in the first two events this week.

McDowell was victorious on Saturday night at Wythe Raceway in Rural Retreat, Virginia, while Hedgecock scored the win on Tuesday night at 411 Motor Speedway in Seymour, Tennessee.

On Saturday night, Chickamauga, Georgia’s McDowell dominated the series opener at Wythe Raceway.

It marked McDowell’s third career series victory, and gave him the $10,000 winner’s payday.

The series was slated to move to Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap, Tennessee on Monday night for Round Two of the 11-race series.

But heavy rains began falling about early Monday afternoon, forcing the series and track officials to cancel the event. A reschedule date has not been determined, but officials are looking at possibilities, and a decision will be announced at a later time.

On Tuesday night, Cory Hedgecock took the lead from Michael Chilton on lap 15 went on to claim his first-career series victory at 411 Motor Speedway.

Hedgecock became the 36th different winner in tour history, worth $3,500 to the Loudon, Tennessee driver.

Chilton led the field from the drop of the green flag until lap 15 when Hedgecock made his presence known and grabbed the lead down the frontstretch. Hedgecock would lead the remaining distance for the win over Eric Wells in second.

Michael Chilton finished third, with Evans, Georgia’s Brandon Overton in fourth and Roberts in fifth.

The series moves to Georgia’s Toccoa Raceway on Thursday, July 19, then travels to Georgia’s Swainsboro Raceway on Friday, July 20, Screven Motor Speedway in Sylvania, Georgia on Saturday, July 21 and Georgia’s Rome Speedway on Sunday, July 22.
