Local planning officials got a first look Tuesday at some potential road improvement projects that could be considered by the city of Oakwood in the coming years.
In April of 2017, the city moved to start a citywide traffic improvement study. At Tuesday's meeting of the Gainesville-Hall Metropolitan Planning Organization's Technical Coordinating Committee, the firm that conducted the survey presented their findings and recommendations.
Chris Edmundson and Dave Kahlbaugh of CHA Consulting Inc, showed assessments of 18 intersections in the city that were identified as problem spots. Of those, the firm recommended improvements for seven locations.
The largest proposed project would be a roundabout at the intersection of Main Street and Flat Creek Road, which is estimated to cost over $500,000. Also recommended is an access road for Sam's Club onto Thurmon Tanner Parkway, an extension of McClure Drive and several turning lane adjustments. Each project is expected to cost at least $100,000 with what Edmundson and Kahlbaugh called conservative estimates.
While several intersections on Mundy Mill Road, including Frontage Road and Thurmon Tanner Parkway, were identified as problems, CHA Consulting recommended to maintain current patterns throughout the busy highway, with the exception of a new access road into the University of North Georgia which is already under construction north of the existing Mathis Drive access.
Edmundson said the firm's findings will be given to Oakwood officials to allow the city staff and council to decide which projects to pursue and in what timeframe.
