Helen Fire personnel don’t limit rescues to humans

HELEN — In the third most-visited tourist destination in Georgia, emergency personnel sometimes face unconventional situations.

Over the weekend, Helen Fire Department responders were called to a location on Edelweiss Strasse, where a small dog apparently had become trapped in an uncovered manhole.

Helen police requested firefighters to the location at 1:20 p.m. Saturday.

“When they got there, the dog was in the culvert and they just made friends with it,” said Helen Fire Chief Jody Prickett. “[A firefighter] went to North Ga. BBQ and got some leftovers. While the dog was eating the barbecue, a firefighter gained the animal’s trust and removed it. The dog did run off after the release.”

Firefighters Robby Burke, Shad Sosebee and Lauren Rumley responded on the call, which lasted until 2:30 p.m.

Light rain had begun to fall by the time the dog was freed.
