Flowery Branch to discuss 'brunch bill,' special elections at Thursday meeting

Posted 6:00PM on Wednesday 4th July 2018 ( 5 years ago )

Flowery Branch City Council is slated to discuss a pair of special elections at its meeting Thursday — one for residents to weigh in on the so-called "brunch bill" and one to fill the vacant seat on the council left by the late Fred Richards.

The brunch bill allows for local governments to let residents decide whether or not to move up the start time for selling alcohol on Sundays, from 12:30 p.m. to 11 a.m.

Flowery Branch leaders are looking at putting the item on the ballot in November, when voters will already be at the polls for the general elections.

Several other local jurisdictions have taken a look at the bill, including Helen, which is also looking to get a vote held in November, and Suwanee, which is looking to hold off until 2019.

Meanwhile, council will also discuss a course of action for filling the vacant council post.

That, too, appears to be something that will be finalized at the ballot box in November.

City officials are proposing to fill Richards' remaining term with a special election to be held in conjunction with the general election.

Should it pass, the qualifying period would likely be held between July 16-18, with a qualifying fee of $144. Voters who wish to cast a ballot in that election must be registered by October 9.
